A state grand jury has voted not to file criminal charges against a Jersey City police sergeant in a fatal officer-involved shooting on John F. Kennedy Boulevard, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office as reported by Hudson County View and Jersey City Times.

The grand jury finished deliberations and voted “no bill” against Jersey City Police Sgt. Ricardo Reyes, the outlets reported, citing the Attorney General’s Office. Evidence presented to the jury included body-worn camera video, surveillance footage, police radio transmissions, medical records, and witness interviews, Hudson County View reported.

The encounter was investigated by the Attorney General’s Office under the state’s Independent Prosecutor Directive and presented to a state grand jury, as required when a person dies during a law enforcement encounter. New Jersey law requires such cases to go to a grand jury to decide whether the evidence supports an indictment.

According to the Attorney General’s account summarized by Hudson County View, the shooting occurred about 1:22 p.m. on Sept. 5, 2025, near John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Clinton Avenue. Officers in separate marked vehicles reported hearing objects strike their cars, made U-turns back to the intersection, and encountered Steven Sanchez, 26, of Jersey City, who was allegedly pointing what appeared to be a gun.

Investigators said officers ordered Sanchez to drop the weapon and that he did not comply. Reyes allegedly fired after Sanchez turned the weapon toward him, according to the Attorney General’s summary. A compressed air pistol and projectiles believed to have been fired from it were recovered at the scene, Hudson County View reported.

Sanchez was taken to Jersey City Medical Center and was pronounced dead at about 8:45 p.m., according to the same account. Reyes sustained a non-life-threatening injury, and no other officers or civilians were reported injured.

The Attorney General’s Office identified Reyes and Sanchez on Sept. 12, 2025, and later released body-worn camera footage of the incident in April 2026, Hudson County View reported.
